Company History
Foundation
DLVSystem s.r.l. was founded by professors and researchers from the University of Calabria (Unical), the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), and the University of Oxford. Its purpose was to promote one of the most successful and widely used systems for advanced database applications, knowledge representation, and reasoning (DLV).
As a research spin-off from the University of Calabria, DLVSYSTEM s.r.l. actively collaborates with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Unical.
Engineering Research Outcomes
DLVSystem s.r.l. was awarded the PIA grant (Pacchetti Integrati di Agevolazione Industria, Artigianato e Servizi), receiving funding for the technological development of the research prototypes that led to the DLV Artificial Intelligence system.
The grant also supported the training of highly qualified personnel dedicated to the company’s internal Research and Development (R&D) process.
Academic Spin-off
The University of Calabria (UNICAL) grants DLVSystem s.r.l. official status as an Academic Spin-off.
DLVSystem s.r.l. gains access to the “PROGETTO C.R.E.S.C.I.T.A,” a project promoted and managed by Calpark S.C.p.A. (the Scientific and Technological Park of Calabria) to support the commercial development of the DLV Technology.
With its Business Plan, DLVSystem wins first prize at the Start Cup Calabria and is accepted into UNICAL’s TECHNEST incubator.
Startup
2010
The engineering of DLV began, and the company hired its first employees.
The engineering plan was based on a technological Research and Development (R&D) project that aimed to:
- Improve the existing functionality of the DLV system, leveraging new algorithms and optimization techniques to make the system more efficient and capable of handling large volumes of data;
- Expand and strengthen DLV with new functionalities required by real-world applications that intended to successfully apply the system;
- Develop the system’s specialization in two key application domains: data integration and knowledge management.
Product Suite Launch
The DLV technology was launched as a Business Suite of products for industrial use.
Extensions were provided for interaction with DBMS, ontologies, and major programming languages (e.g., JAVA).
Industrial Testing
DLVSystem focused heavily on developing applications for industrial use cases, which played a significant role in the company’s growth.
Commercial Growth
The porting of DLV technology to smart devices and distributed environments was initiated.
DLV products were enhanced for use with Big Data and for interaction with other Artificial Intelligence paradigms (Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision), attracting new clients and starting new collaborations with public and private entities.
